Hungary's capital Budapest welcomed thousands of runners today for the 36th edition of the SPAR Budapest Marathon.

After last year's 35th Budapest Marathon could only take place virtually, on October 9 and 10, 2021 was again run live on site.

Not everyone was allowed to participate

However, as in other countries in Central Europe, some groups of people were discriminated against and excluded due to absurd political rules. For example, in Budapest, only athletes who had been vaccinated against COVID-19 or had a certificate of recovery were allowed. This restriction did not apply to competitive athletes with a sports doctor's license and people under 18 years of age under the supervision of a person protected against the coronavirus.

Many running competitions

Accordingly, the organizers had to expect fewer participants than in previous years. After all, the marathon race with its 6,000 participants is comparable in size to the largest marathon in Austria, the Vienna City Marathon. In addition, more than 1,000 relay teams compete in the Budapest Marathon each year. There, two or four runners share the distance of 42.195 kilometers. Other fringe events included running events over 30 kilometers, 10 kilometers and 5 kilometers.

The course of the Budapest Marathon

The marathon race started at Heroes' Square and led through Andrassy Avenue, over the Chain Bridge and along the banks of the Danube. The athletes also got to see the panorama of Pest and the Parliament building.

However, the course of the Budapest Marathon is not very suitable for best times. Two years ago, a time of 2:23:21 hours was enough for Peter Jenkei to win. The 27-year-old course record, set by Zoltan Kiss, is 2:15:04 hours.

The winners

The fastest athlete this year was Gaspar Csere, who was the only athlete to stay under 2:20 hours with a time of 2:17:43. Defending champion Peter Jenkei followed in second place after 2:20:58 hours. In the women's race, six athletes ran a time under three hours. The fastest was Tünde Szabo with a time of 2:43:39 hours.
