After the Los Angeles Marathon last year was one of the last major marathons to take place before the start of the Covid 19 pandemic, in 2021 the marathon was exceptionally held towards the end of the year.
For instead of March, thousands of runners were now sporting in early November at the Los Angeles Marathon and the other fringe events.
36th marathon in L.A.
This was the 36th edition of the marathon in California after the premiere in 1986. Among other places, the race was held on the famous Hollywood Boulevard.
The defending champions were runners from Africa. Last year, Ethiopian Bayelign Teshager won the race with 2:08:27 hours, while in the women's race, Kenyan Margaret Muriuki managed a time under 2:30 hours with 2:29:28 hours. The course records are even faster with 2:06:35 hours and 2:24:12 hours by Ethiopians Markos Geneti (2011) and Askale Merachi (2019).
The winners
There were no top-class times in the men's race. The 39-year-old John Cheruiyot Korir remained with 2:12:48 hours as the only runner under 2:15 hours. In the women's race, Welshwoman Natasha Cockram triumphed in 2:33:17 hours.
Date 2022
Next year, the 2022 Los Angeles Marathon will return to its usual March date. March 20, 2022 has been set as the date.
