José Luis Santana Marin (Mexico City, Mexico) and Andrea Pomaranski (Wolverine Lake, Mich.) topped the podium in Humana Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series San Antonio Half Marathon.
18,000 participants in San Antonio
The Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series closed out its 2021 calendar year with the return of the Humana Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series San Antonio event. San Antonio hosted running’s biggest fiesta in a city full of pride, vibrance and over 300 years of rich history. Over 18,000 registered participants took on the San Antonio streets lined with cheer squads, local bands and entertainment from start to finish. For the Humana Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series San Antonio Marathon, Colin Marz (San Antonio, Texas) and Ildi Gaal (Raleigh, N.C.) were crowned champions. he 2021 Humana Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series San Antonio participants received a running tour of the Alamo City and its many historic landmarks including running along the River Walk and past Tower of Americas, Torch of Friendship and Alamodome, before the finish line greeted them along E Cesar Chavez Blvd and Hemisfair Park.
Marathon: The winners
In the marathon, Colin Marz (San Antonio, Texas) was crowned the winner for the men clocking a time of 2:43:07. Jon Day (Austin, Texas) was second with a time of 2:44:51 and Steve Kindred (Kaysville, Utah) followed in third place finishing in 2:46:32. Ildi Gaal (Raleigh, N.C.) was the women’s winner with a final time of 2:50:46 with Oliva Heather (San Antonio, Texas) following in second with a finishing time of 3:08:17 and Esperanza Lopez (Fort Worth, Texas) rounding out the podium in 3:08:43.
The best half marathon runners
In the half marathon, it was a Mexican trio that sweep the podium with José Luis Santana Marin (Mexico City, Mexico) taking top spot clocking a time of 1:02:59. Hesiquio Flores Romero (Mexico City, Mexico) was second with a time of 1:05:29 and Jesús Arturo Esparza Pérez (Mexico City, Mexico) followed in third place finishing 1:07:53. Andrea Pomaranski (Wolverine Lake, Mich.) was the women’s champion with a final time of 1:14:32 with Erica Kirkwood (San Antonio, Texas) behind finishing in second with a finishing time of 1:23:10 and Savannah Boucher (San Antonio, Texas) rounding out the podium in 1:23:48.
The weekend of racing kicked off on Saturday with the 5K and 10K races which began at Sunset Station and finished in Travis Park.
Elite runners and fast times aside, the weekend’s events were all about the party atmosphere. Several local bands, including Zero Gravity, the Jonathan Garcia Band, Dixie White Horse, DJ Donnie Dee, the Mariachi Mile among many other talented artists from the San Antonio community performed live on band stages along the route interspersed with cheerleaders and crowd support. The party wasn’t only on course – The Emotions and Volcán closed out the show as the Encore Entertainment.
