Alaska Running: Land of the Midnight Sun and Rugged Trails
Running in Alaska offers an experience unlike anywhere else on the planet, defined by extremes: extreme light in the summer, extreme cold in the winter, and extremely rugged, beautiful terrain. The state’s largest and most famous event is the Anchorage Mayor's Marathon & Half Marathon. Held close to the summer solstice, runners benefit from the long hours of daylight, sometimes running under the midnight sun. The course is known for its rolling hills and utilizing the city’s extensive park and trail systems, providing stunning views of the Chugach Mountains.
The Mountain Challenge: Crow Pass Crossing
For elite athletes and ultra-endurance runners, the calendar highlight is the Crow Pass Crossing. This historic 24-mile mountain race is not a typical marathon; it is a point-to-point event from Girdwood to Eagle River that involves significant elevation gain, stream crossings, and challenging wilderness terrain. It is considered one of the toughest mountain running events in North America and showcases Alaska’s untamed environment at its most demanding.
In addition to the major Anchorage races, events around the state often focus on unique wildlife viewing opportunities and true wilderness isolation. Whether you are running on trails carved through the forest or tackling the elevation near the glaciers, preparation for wildlife encounters and unpredictable weather is as important as training for the distance in the Last Frontier.
