Obstacle courses are especially popular among young athletes! If you are bored with ordinary road running, then obstacle runs are just the thing for you. They are called Obstacle Runs, Mud Runs and Dirt Runs.
But what exactly are obstacle runs anyway? Usually, it's an ordinary running competition, but one that requires overcoming many obstacles on the way to the finish line. Typical hurdles include crossing a moat or climbing over a high wall. Many obstacles are man-made, but some are naturally created by the environment.
Where do such obstacle courses take place? It's totally different. There are obstacle runs that go through the middle of a city, but there are also obstacle runs that take place in a large area. Even in the mountains, one or the other Mud Run is held. Unlike normal runs, you should not enter these competitions in your "nicest outfit". Old running shoes and used clothes are the better choice. Because your equipment and clothes get with guarantee his dirt off.
Which obstacle courses are there in Austria?
There are about 40 dirt runs in Austria every year, including some series. For about 10 years there is the Wildsau Dirt Run, which is now held about five times a year throughout Austria. In this series you can start over 5 km, 10 km or 20 km. One lap is 5 km long. At the beginning and at the end of the round there are many, varied obstacles. In between, you have to run a few kilometers on a mostly challenging course in hilly terrain. Motivated "dirt runners" can run the course up to four times, covering a distance of 20 km.
The longest obstacle race takes place at the beginning of the year. At the Zillingtaler Celtic Warrior in Burgenland, a course length of up to 50 km can be chosen. Over 60 obstacles accumulate on one lap (a good 15 km). Almost as hard is the Fisherman's Friend StrongmanRun in Flachau. At this luaf the course length is "only" 20 km, but including about 800 meters of altitude. So not only an obstacle course, but also a mountain run. On the highest points of the course, the participants even have to cross snow fields - an additional "natural obstacle", so to speak. The Erzberg Dirtrun has no artificial obstacles at all. In Eisenerz, Styria, the approximately 1,000 participants are allowed to run across natural mud ponds, abandoned mining tunnels or through an active mining area.
An obstacle course through the middle of the city
A completely different obstacle course is the Grazathlon, which runs through the center of Graz and has established itself for many years as one of the most popular mud runs in Austria. Almost 20 natural and artificial obstacles confront the 4,000 starters on the 10 km course through Graz. The 260 stairs up the Schlossberg are a particular highlight. The series has since been extended to Innsbruck (Innsbruckathlon) and Linz (Linzathlon).
The "Spartan Race" series is known worldwide. Two of these races take place in Austria, one in the west and one in the east of the country. In addition, there is also a Winter Spartan Race in Salzburg. The Spartan Race also focuses on teamwork. Thousands of interested people take part every year.
