Following the cancellation of Kenenisa Bekele, a spectacular women's duel will take center stage at the 2022 Boston Marathon.

The Boston Marathon starts on Monday, April 18, 2022 in Hopkinton. The world's oldest marathon will be broadcast live on TV.

Prize money at the Boston Marathon 2022

A prize money of $150,000 will be paid out for winning the marathon. For a course record there will be an additional 50,000 US dollars. This record is in great danger, especially for the women. The winner with a course record would therefore receive prize money totaling 200,000 US dollars.

Olympic champion against world number one

In the women's race, all eyes are on the duel between Peres Jepchirchir and Joyciline Jepkosgei. But the two Kenyans will be challenged by a strong Ethiopian. Because not only Jepchirchir and Jepkosgei have best times under 2:18 hours, but also Ethiopia's Degitu Azimeraw.

Jepchirchir in the role of favorite

Top favorite is probably Peres Jepchirchir, who is almost unbeatable at the moment. The won all her marathon races since 2019. In 2019 in Saitama, in 2020 with a personal best of 2:17:16 hours in Valencia, in 2021 with the Olympic victory in Sapporo and then in New York.

In Boston, Jepkosgei is now looking to break Jepchirchir's winning streak. Jepkosgei ran a world best of 2:17:43 in the London Marathon last year. She is also pressing for revenge after being clearly beaten by Jepchirchir at the Valencia Marathon in 2020 with 2:18:40 hours. So far, Jepchirchir has won every duel against Jepkosgei.

Laughing third?

A dangerous outsider is Degitu Azimeraw, who also finished second in the 2021 London Marathon in under 2:18 hours. With 42-year-old Edna Kiplagat, there is a fourth runner with a marathon best time under 2:20 hours.

Course record to fall

For a course record bonus of $50,000, Bizunesh Deba's eight-year-old record time must be broken. The Ethiopian ran a time of 2:19:59 in 2014.

High-class men's field despite cancellation of Kenenisa Bekele

In the men's race, the eleven-year-old course record is probably out of reach. Since 2011, Kenyan Geoffrey Kiprono Mutai's 2:03:02 hours have been out of reach. Although there are two athletes with personal bests under the record in Birhanu Legese (Ethiopia / 2:02:48 hours) and Evans Chebet (Kenya / 2:03:00 hours), as the course is quite challenging, it will be anything but easy for the men's elite to reach this record mark.

5 athletes with best times under 2:04 hours

Despite the cancellation of the second fastest marathon runner of all times (Kenenisa Bekele), the elite field in the men's race is outstandingly good. For in total there are five athletes with best times under 2:04 hours. Legese and Chebet are joined by Kenya's Lawrence Cherono (2:03:04 hours) and the Ethiopian duo of Sisay Lemma (2:03:36 hours) and Kinde Atanaw (2:03:51 hours).
