Illinois Running: The Chicago Major and Beyond
Illinois offers a dynamic range of races, from the massive, world-class events in Chicago to charming smaller-town runs that explore the state’s agricultural backbone. The undisputed centerpiece of the calendar is the Chicago Marathon. As one of the six Abbott World Marathon Majors, this race draws elite athletes and tens of thousands of runners from across the globe. Known for its incredibly flat course, the race offers a spectacular tour of 29 Chicago neighborhoods and boasts a legendary atmosphere, making it one of the premier events for chasing personal records.
Beyond the fall marathon spectacle, the Chicago distance running scene kicks off early with the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K. Held annually near St. Patrick’s Day, this huge race is considered the unofficial start of the local running season. The course takes runners right through the heart of downtown Chicago, past iconic architecture, offering a fast and festive eight kilometers before concluding with a large post-race party in Grant Park.
Moving away from the big city, the state also features the Illinois Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10K in the Champaign-Urbana area. This event provides a more Midwestern, college-town feel. The route is known for weaving through the beautiful University of Illinois campus and local neighborhoods, offering an accessible and popular spring challenge that contrasts nicely with the urban hustle of the major city events.
