Minnesota Running: The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon and Lake Runs
Minnesota, the "Land of 10,000 Lakes," boasts a vibrant running culture and a calendar filled with scenic, high-quality events. The most famous and largest race is the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon, often called "The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America." The course is a magnificent tour, starting in downtown Minneapolis and winding around several of the city's famous lakes (like Lake Harriet and Lake of the Isles) before following the Mississippi River and finishing dramatically at the State Capitol in St. Paul. Its autumn timing often showcases beautiful fall foliage, adding to its prestige as a major destination race.
The Coastal Challenge of Grandma's Marathon
Another major highlight, and Minnesota's oldest marathon, is Grandma's Marathon in Duluth. Held annually in June, this popular race runs along the scenic north shore of Lake Superior, starting in Two Harbors and finishing in Canal Park in Duluth. The course is famously fast and relatively flat, capitalizing on the cool lake breeze, making it a favorite for runners seeking a fast time and a visually stunning lakeside run. The accompanying Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon also draws thousands of participants to the stunning North Shore.
Beyond the major road races, Minnesota is a hub for extreme winter and trail running. Events like the Arrowhead 135 challenge runners and racers to cover 135 miles in the severe cold of Northern Minnesota in January, while the Superior Trail Races in the Sawtooth Mountain Range offer challenging, rugged courses over vast wilderness trails. Whether urban speed or extreme endurance is your goal, Minnesota provides a fantastic, hearty running experience.
