Providence Running: Historic Hills and Rhode Island Waterways
Running in Providence, the capital of Rhode Island, offers a charming tour through history that quickly reminds runners they are navigating classic New England geography. The Providence Marathon and Half Marathon is the city’s major distance event. The course is challenging, featuring the famous rolling hills of the historic East Side and the picturesque residential areas. While not a flat speed course, the route is visually rewarding, weaving past beautiful brownstones and through the grounds of Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design.
The WaterFire Finish and Coastal Views
The course makes excellent use of the city's waterways, running alongside the Providence River and the extensive waterfront area. Runners pass by the famous WaterPlace Park, the site of the city’s unique "WaterFire" spectacle, providing an energetic urban backdrop. The half marathon distance is extremely popular, allowing runners to enjoy the historic scenery and the urban vibrancy without the full marathon commitment, making it an excellent destination race for runners from across the Northeast.
The city's calendar also features the annual CVS Health Charity Classic 5K, a massive community event that shuts down key downtown streets for a fast, high-energy sprint. Whether tackling the full marathon distance to conquer the undulating historical streets or enjoying a shorter race near the bustling downtown, running in Providence delivers a scenic, academically rich, and authentically hilly New England experience.
