Slovakia, a country of five million inhabitants, is located in the heart of Europe!

The capital Bratislava is also the largest city in the country and for many also one of the most beautiful cities in Central Europe. The largest marathon in the country is also held here.

Although running is practiced intensively in Slovakia, there are hardly any notable international successes among runners or track and field athletes. The national sport in Slovakia is ice hockey. The biggest success was the world championship title in 2002. Soccer is also very popular in Slovakia. The national team qualified for the World Cup in South Africa in 2010 and the European Championship in France in 2016. In both tournaments, the team made it through the group stage, only losing to the Netherlands and Germany in the round of 16.

Among the most successful individual athletes are canoeist Peter Hochschorner, with three Olympic victories, and biathlete Anastasiya Kuzmina, who in 2010 secured the first Olympic victory for a female winter athlete from Slovakia at the Winter Games. The racing cyclist Peter Sagan, who has been awarded the green jersey of the best sprinter several times at the Tour de France, is also known worldwide.

The biggest running event in Slovakia

The biggest marathon in Slovakia passes through the capital. The Bratislava Marathon was founded in 2006 and within a short time it has become a popular running event. In addition to the marathon, there are several supporting events. The course leads through the city center and along the Danube. It is described by the participants as extraordinarily beautiful.

The oldest marathon in Europe

In the east of the country, a trip to the Košice Marathon is worthwhile. The marathon is at least historically significant. It was held for the first time in 1924. This makes the Košice Marathon the oldest marathon in Europe that is still held today and the second oldest marathon in the world after the Boston Marathon. While the Bratislava Marathon is run in spring, in Kosice the starting signal is given in October.

Other recommendations in Slovakia

The most famous triathlon event in the country is the Challenge Samorin in June. There are also some interesting trail and scenic runs in Slovakia, such as the Poludnica Run in the winter sports region of Demänovská Dolina. This is a 23-kilometer trail run that was part of the Golden Trail Series.

Interesting races, it was interesting to read about them. Since I am fond of long-distance running: https://androshchuk.com, I want to take part in Slovakian marathons, as they have a fairly good organization and interesting running routes.
