Washington Running: Downhill Speed and Mountain Glory
Washington State’s running calendar is dominated by two extremes: high-speed, downhill courses famous for Boston Marathon qualifying times, and world-class, rugged trail races deep in the Cascade Mountains. The state is renowned for its downhill marathons, particularly the Tunnel Marathons series, which includes events like Light at the End of the Tunnel and Tunnel Vision. These races start high in the Cascades near Snoqualmie Pass and offer a massive net drop in elevation, making them target events for runners seeking a personal best or a guaranteed BQ time. A unique feature involves running through a long, dark former railway tunnel—a memorable experience for any runner.
The Metropolitan and Trail Contrast: Seattle and the Cascades
The urban running scene is anchored by the Seattle Marathon, a classic event providing a comprehensive tour of the city, utilizing its waterways and neighborhoods. While popular, many regional runners favor the unique challenges outside the city. For trail and ultra-runners, Washington is a mecca, hosting some of the most challenging events in the country. The Bigfoot 200 Endurance Run is one such epic event, challenging participants to a 200-mile course around Mount St. Helens and Mount Adams, showcasing the state’s raw, untamed wilderness.
Another popular and highly scenic event is the North Olympic Discovery Marathon (NODM). This race utilizes the Olympic Discovery Trail, running along the water near Port Angeles, offering spectacular views of the Olympic Mountains and the Strait of Juan de Fuca, ensuring that every type of runner—from the speed demon to the mountain conqueror—finds their ideal challenge in the Evergreen State.
