Stockholm celebrated its big comeback after last year's cancellation on October 9, 2021.
After the largest marathon in Scandinavia was held last year only as a virtual race due to the Corona pandemic, this year was allowed to run through Stockholm again as usual.
Up to 15,000 marathon runners per year
With around 15,000 marathon participants every year, the Stockholm Marathon is one of the largest marathon events in Europe. The first marathon was run in Stockholm in 1979. Within the last four decades, the marathon has become an essential running event in Sweden.
The beautiful course at the Stockholm Marathon
The highlights of the attractive route include Östermalm, the Royal Castle, Västerbron Bridge and the City Hall. Kungsholmen Island and, of course, Stockholm's Old Town were also part of the course before the spectacular finish in Stockholm's Olympic Stadium.
First time under 2:10 hours?
Despite the beautiful course, however, one thing is not possible in Stockholm. The profiled course does not allow for world-class times. So far, no marathon time under 2:10 hours has ever been run. At the last event two years ago, Ethiopian Nigussie Sahlesilassie came extremely close. At that time, he set a new course record of 2:10:10 hours at the Stockholm Marathon. A time under 2:10 hours should therefore be possible in the near future. In the women's race, on the other hand, the course record has been unmatched for more than 30 years. Because the 2:28:24 hours of Norway's running legend Grete Waitz from the year 1988 could reach until today no runner in Stockholm.
Records just missed
There were no new records this year. In the men's race, however, it was a dramatic race until the last meter. Only 10 seconds separated the top 4. The best reserves had the Ethiopian Fikadu Teferi with a time of 2:12:24 hours. In the women's race, Atalel Anmut (2:29:03 hours), also a runner from Ethiopia, triumphed. Local hero Carolina Wikström also finished in second place with a time of 2:29:56 under two and a half hours.
