There's more to the United Kingdom than just the London Marathon!
While it is one of the fastest and biggest marathons in the world, it is only one of many impressive running events on the island.
The biggest running events in the UK
The London Marathon was first held in 1981. At that time, the interest was already enormous with almost 8,000 starters. In the meantime, over 40,000 runners take part in the marathon in London every year. After Berlin, the London Marathon is the second fastest marathon in the world. Eliud Kipchoge ran 2:02:37 in 2019, the second fastest marathon time in history at the time. The Kenyan only fell short of his own world record, which he had set six months earlier in Berlin with 2:01:39 hours. In the women's race, local hero Paula Radcliffe has held the course record since 2003 with 2:15:26 hours. Until 2019, no female runner on our planet was able to improve on Radcliffe's time before Brigid Kosgei managed a new record performance in Chicago.The flat course of the London Marathon passes many famous buildings and sights. These include Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and, of course, the Thames.
In Scotland, the Edinburgh Marathon has become an absolute hit. The course impresses with a grandiose mix of city marathon and countryside run. More than 20,000 runners line up on the starting line at the end of May. Over the marathon distance, there are around 7,000 athletes. In Great Britain, one should not forget the Great Run Series, with races in Manchester, Newcastle, Portsmouth and elsewhere. These are half marathons, 10-kilometre runs and 10-mile races with tens of thousands of starters, including many international top stars.
Other well-known marathons include the Brighton Marathon and the Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon.
The legendary Obstacle Run
Obstacle runs are very trendy at the moment. In these runs, you have to overcome both natural and man-made obstacles on the course. The mother of obstacle runs is the so-called Tough Guy in Wolverhampton. In this race you have to crawl through narrow tunnels, dive into ice-cold waters and climb into caves. Only about half of the participants can finish the 12-kilometre race.
Trails and Triathlons
An absolute highlight in nature is the four-day Ring of Steall Skyrace (or Salomon Skyline Scotland). At this trail and mountain running event in Scotland, you have to cover distances of sometimes even more than 50 kilometres. The event is part of the world-renowned Golden Trail Series.
Triathlon fans will get their money's worth at the IRONMAN 70.3 events in Edinburgh, Weymouth and Staffordshire, among others. The IRONMAN Wales - Pembrokeshire and the IRONMAN UK - Bolton are over the full long distance.
