Czech Republic's biggest marathon event is back on the running stage. After cancellations in the last two years, the Prague Marathon could be held again for the first time in over 1,000 days.

Flat and beautiful course through Prague

Around 7,000 runners were registered for the attractive marathon race through the Old Town of Prague. The starting signal was given at 9 am at the Old Town Square. In addition to the Old Town, the Charles Bridge and the Vltava River were also highlights of the very flat marathon course with only 10 meters of elevation gain.

Fast times in focus

In addition to thousands of amateur runners, there were also some top runners at the start of the Prague Marathon 2022. After Lonah-Chemtai Salpeter set a new course record with 2:19:46 hours at the last edition in 2019, the elite should also be focused on new course records today. In the men's race, Eliud Kiptanui's best of 2:05:39 has been unmatched for twelve years now. The last winner in Prague, Wolde Dawit (Ethiopia) missed this record by only 39 seconds with 2:06:18 hours.

The top favorites

The favorite in the men's race was Kenyan Emmanuel Saina, who ran a best time of 2:05:21 in his marathon debut in 2018 and finished fifth in the Lisbon Marathon last year, again finishing under 2:06. In the women's race, 36-year-old Nancy Jelagat was the top favorite. The runner from Kenya impressed only last year at the Valencia Marathon with an outstanding 2:19:31 hours.

No new records

Despite good times, there were no new record times this year. In the women's race, five runners managed times under 2:30 hours. The fastest was Bekelech Borecha. The little-known Ethiopian triumphed after 2:22:56 hours ahead of the Kenyan Purity Changwony.

In the men's race, however, a Kenyan led the field. The 29-year-old Nobert Kigen celebrated his first marathon victory since 2015, but with 2:07:54 hours the co-favorite clearly missed the course record. In total, five athletes ran times under 2:10 hours.
