More than 10,000 runners were at the start of the Rotterdam Marathon this Sunday.
After the Belgian Bashir Abdi even set a European record at the NN Marathon Rotterdam last year, the starting field on April 10, 2022 was also outstanding.
Setting the bar high
It was less than half a year ago when Bashir Abdi achieved this outstanding performance. In 2021, when the Rotterdam Marathon was not held until the end of October, the Olympic medalist stormed to not only the European record but also a new course record with a furious time of 2:03:36 hours. It was also the fastest time on Dutch soil, after then only a week earlier in Amsterdam the winner came to 2:03:39 hours.
Fastest marathon in the Netherlands
This status as the fastest marathon in the Netherlands and also as one of the fastest marathons in the world, the Rotterdam Marathon naturally also wanted to consolidate this year. Accordingly, several international top stars could again be signed up to run close to the course records. In the women's race, this course record has now been unchallenged for ten years. Back then, Tiki Gelana (Ethiopia) ran a top-class time of 2:18:58 hours. The defending champion in the women's race was also a runner from Kenya. Stella Barsosio was the only lady to stay under two and a half hours with 2:22:08 hours half a year ago.
Abdi vs. Nageeye
In both the women's and men's events, the defending champions were in action. Bashir Abdi was challenged by Abdi Nageeye, among others. The Dutchman finished 2nd last year at the Olympics ahead of Abdi. Marius Kipserem was also at the start. He finished second in Rotterdam last year. Reuben Kipyego, who ran a time under 2:04 hours in Milan in 2021, also had a chance of winning.
In the women's race, defending champion Stella Barsosio was challenged by marathon world champion Rose Chelimo (Bahrain) and Ethiopian Haven Hailu, among others.
The marathon race started at 10 a.m. on Sunday. The flat course led through the city center of Rotterdam.
Victory and national record
As at the 2021 Olympic Games in Sapporo, the Belgian-Dutch duel went to Dutchman Abdi Nageeye. In a race that was tactically run for a long time, the decision was only made in the final sprint. There Nageeye could once again show his skills in the last meters. After dominating the three-way battle for silver and bronze in the final straight at the Olympic marathon a year ago, he now also prevailed in Rotterdam. He also set a new Dutch national record of 2:04:56.
Abdi misses the podium
At the same time, but with a meter behind, he reached the finish line Ethiopian Leul Gebreselassie in second place. Last year's winner Bashir Abdi missed the podium. After 2:05:23 hours he finished 4th behind Kenyan Kiprop Reuben Kipyego. Co-favorite Marius Kipserem fell away from the leading group early in the race and had to end the race early.
Hans-Peter Innerhofer from Salzburg also performed well, finishing in 30th place in 2:21:24 hours. Only digestion problems on the last kilometers kept him from finishing under 2:20 hours.
Ethiopian wins ahead of local heroine
In the women's race, co-favorite Hayen Hailu triumphed. After 2:22:01 hours, the Ethiopian was 50 seconds ahead of Nienke Brinkman from the Netherlands, who surprisingly finished second.
