For many runners, the half marathon serves as preparation for the approaching marathon. But participation in a half marathon can also be worthwhile as a first endurance test with regard to longer distances. Those who want to participate in one of the many marathons offered between March and May usually run one or two half marathons during the twelve-week marathon preparation period. So there should be one or two half marathons in the area at the beginning of the year.
Half marathons in the U.S.
Big running events are held all year round in the USA. At the beginning of the year, for example, there are marathons in Arizona, Houston, Orlando and New Orleans, all of which also have a half marathon in their program.
Little choice in Central Europe
Especially in Central European countries there are very few opportunities to participate in half marathons in winter. In Austria, for example, half marathons are usually only offered in January and February in Vienna on the Prater Hauptallee, and there is hardly any choice in Switzerland either. Things look a little better in Germany at least, where around 30 public half marathon events are held in the first two months of the year.
Italy already has a well-filled schedule in February. Two very well-known races are the Verona Half Marathon and the Napoli City Half Marathon. The latter attracts top international runners to the city of the Mafia thanks to its flat and fast course.
