Due to its beautiful alpine landscape, Switzerland is predestined for tough, but also at least equally impressive mountain runs. Every year, around 100 races are held in the mountains of Switzerland.

Many of these runs have established themselves as major events that attract quite a few runners from abroad to Switzerland. Of course, most of the mountain runs take place in the summer. Many of these events start in the valley and run up a mountain towards the summit.

Since many competitions take place off roads or well-secured trails, different equipment is sometimes required than for runs on the road. The footwear is replaced by trail running shoes, which guarantee a better grip in the terrain. In some cases, participants also use poles to take some of the strain off their legs. Which mountain runs are there in Switzerland?

One of the toughest mountain runs is the Inferno half marathon, which covers a distance of 21.1 km with over 2,000 meters of altitude gain. The finish line is at lofty heights in the Alps. Much shorter, but at least as tough is the mountain run "Les KM de Chando" in the Valais Alps. Over 2,000 meters of altitude have to be mastered on a 7.7 km course. After climbing 150 switchbacks to the village of Chandolin, the final 600-meter ascent follows on the ski slope. The finish line is at an altitude of almost 3,000 meters at the Illhorn. A brutal, but at the same time incredibly beautiful mountain run.

We can rightly write similar things about the Vertical Summer Run in St. Moritz. Because from St. Moritz village, the course of the men's downhill of the Ski World Championships goes really steeply up. The terrain has a gradient of up to 45 degrees. The finish is after 5.5 kilometers and 1,000 meters of altitude on the platform "free fall", from which a magnificent view over the Upper Engadine lakes can be enjoyed.

A new format is the Gigathlon Switzerland, which combines several sports. In addition to mountain biking, cycling and swimming, there is also a mountain run and a trail. The mountain run has a course length of 18 km with 900 meters of altitude and takes place in Davos.
